On capitalism
“Mama, it’s totally not fair! Mikey says when we grow up I can’t build my space museum next to his dinosaur museum because it will ‘create unfair competition.’ I told him my space people won’t bother his dinosaur people.”
On math
“I was born to do this.”
On spelling
“‘After’ is, like, my nightmare. It’s the hardest word I have to spell. ‘After’ and ‘four’. Four is my other nightmare.”
On vocabulary
“Mama, I told the kids at school I was late because I had a largic raction to my ani..tiziobiotics and they were, like, ‘What’s a ani..tiziobiotics?’ I was, like, ‘Seriously? You guys need to study the dictionary.'”
On penmanship
“But, mama, I don’t have time for neat letters!”
On yellow cards (low level demerits)
“Sometimes, mama, my brain goes cuckoo.”
On yellow cards: One more try
“Okay, not cuckoo. It’s just sometimes so many words are inside my brain and they just can’t wait to get out.”
Katie says
Love these posts. Sometimes my brain goes cuckoo too Nicholas.

A brain with too many words that can’t get out = future writer, for sure.

I love that he was telling the other kids to study the dictionary. Ha! That’s awesome! But yes, there is the danger of a plethora of words jumbling about in your brain.

Could I just say that I love the word plethora? :)

I love that he was concerned about their future museums, as if it’s real. Just yesterday my son was crying because he wanted us to hold hands when we all go up to space and his brother said no. ;)

You should get “My mouth is a volcano” by Julia Cook. It takes Nicholas’s last comment about the words not waiting to get out and puts it into context with beautiful illustrations. My eruptor loves the book – he can now read it to me (I think mostly because he’s memorized it. ;))

Oh Nicholas – it IS hard when there are all those words and ideas in your brain and they just need to get out. Our world and especially our schools aren’t always set up to accommodate people with lots of ideas and lots of energy One of these days you will find just the right environment for a mathematically inclined genius full of ideas! And you will hire a nice quiet graduate student (who knows how to spell) and you will invent great things!

I had to share this with my coworkers this morning because it was totally awesome! I especially enjoyed the comments about capitalism- nice! space people v dinosaur people sounds like a good basis for a book (all those words that need to come out) and no one will care about not having time for neat letters (I suffer that same affliction!)
Your boys are fantastic!

Scout always says, “My mouth runneth over.”

Space people and dinosaur people are one in the same, they could split the profits. Tell him to call me and we can come up with a business plan.

I have a nephew like this – sometimes, he just has so much going on in his little brain he can’t help himself. A few years ago, at a very crowded family reunion, I found him running circles around the crowd screaming “I can’t stop myself!” Truer words were never spoken. :-)
Oh, and tell him I had the worst time learning how to spell numbers as a kid – and I’m an English professor now…so it gets easier!
Heather says
Hilarious, as usual. :)

What a beautiful photograph of Nico. I love the stuff your kids say.

Definately… no definetly… ugh…. screw it– “DEFINITELY” is my nightmare. Mess it up every time. I feel this kid’s pain!
May says
It is important to let those words spew out from time to time so they don’t back up on you and make your head explode! I understand!

Oh my gosh! The antibiotics comment had me double over for a few minutes. Hilarious!!
