Dear Buddy,
In July you will turn 10 years old. I think you deserve a party. Not just because you’ll be 70 in dog years (!), although it is a pretty big deal. Really, it’s because you’re awesome. Some things that make us all love you so much include, but are not limited to the following:
- You never act up when we don’t take you on walks, which we rarely do these days.
- You think a simple walk up and down the street is just peachy.
- You allow the boys to pull your ears, chase you around the house, and use your back as a rocky battle field for their Star Wars figures.
- You actually enjoy having your ears pulled, chased around the house, and being used as landscape.
- You make sweeping up the floors after breakfast, snack time, lunch, and dinner completely unnecessary.
- You have velvet lily pad ears.
- You took to your brother from another mother, Buster, like a champ 9 years ago–and he was a bag of nuts back then.
- You have a quintessential Beagle howl that is top notch. Operatic, really.
- You form your lips into a perfect O when you howl, and it’s super cute.
- You only howl when a stranger crosses in front of the house. Everyone, especially the neighbors, appreciates your restraint.
- You are not too big, not too small.
- You wear your new gray hairs better than I do.
- You didn’t mind in the least when I woke you up (unintentionally) from your morning nap to take this picture.
- You are perfect, except for the farting.
Be ready, Buddy, because I already have a little party in the works. Nothing big, of course, but I will warn you now and tell you that Mikey is in charge of decorations.
Love,
mama
p.s. No more getting older, okay?

Wonderful! This warmed my heart. I have a chocolate labrador and I adore her as much as you obviously adore Buddy. Have a wonderful party full of doggy treats. (Love reading your blog btw – I read it daily) x

Jules – that was adorable. I’m feeling all warm & fuzzy inside – just like Buddy on the outside. :-) Older dogs are the best.

Do you think it’s a bad sign that I’m tearing up?! I’m such a moosh. Sigh. But I digress … HAPPY BIRTHDAY BUDDY! You’re so handsome … and debonaire … I would kiss your face if I could.

Nice : )

I’m tearing up, too. My older dog is 12 and, although we swear she plots our deaths while we sleep just so she can always have the couch to herself, she rarely farts — no more getting older for her either.

This just makes me want to weep!! What a sweet boy he is!
I love that you signed it “mama.”

I love it! My dogs are 9 and 10 as well.
On the gas problem – plain, non-fat yogurt in their food once a day will take care of it. :)

So beautiful. Heidi, my Havanese, is almost 2. Can’t believe how much I love her. I had no clue what it would be like because I never had a dog. Now I know. It’s like having another kid (almost.)

Happy Birthday, Buddy.

I feel really close to this post. We don’t have kids yet, but our first born dog Clem is so close to our heart it hurts to think about him not having him around! Thanks for this post.

That was beautiful. I have a cat who is the love of my life. She makes my little apartment feel like the best place on earth because she adds so much quality to my life as all pets do. Please be sure to post pictures of Buddy’s party!
