Over a year ago I confessed I have magical powers. I still do. I can’t read minds or levitate or make the Statute of Liberty disappear. My powers are more subtle. I predict popular colors. In 2003, I saw aqua coming. I say dusty rose is next. (It’s also possible I’m trying to justify my questionable taste.)
My obsession started last spring. A second look here, a thoughtful stare there. By summer, I was on pinterest with a board devoted to dusty rose. One evening, I pinned so many images so quickly, Erin tweeted me out of nowhere and said, “Having a dusty rose moment?”
If you ask my friend, Andrea, it’s not dusty rose. “Call it what it is: 80s frickin’ mauve.” This, after a phenomenally long email exchange where I confessed my search for the perfect dusty rose sofa. (I have a collection of those on pinterest, too.) She claims she’s not a fan. If you ask me, her Christmas cards say otherwise.
For the record, I say mauve is more purple than pink. Dusty rose is more pink than taupe. It doesn’t matter. I’m obsessed with the color and when I worked over the summer on my site redesign, that was my only color request. Here are a few of my favorite images I’ve collected over the last six months. Lately, I’ve seen the color pop up more and more. It’s everywhere! It makes pinning to that dusty rose board easy.
Can’t say I’m fully on board with dusty rose, but I love you for having such a specific obsession.
Ever since puberty I’ve been very anti-pink, but I’ve always secretly adored dusty rose/mauve, especially when paired with soft greens. I have a print of Renoir’s Two Seated Young Girls — it’s not my favorite, but I got it for a good price at a moving sale and it went with my living room’s color palette of dusty rose & light green/burgundy & dark green — I’ve seen lots of tint variation in online pics of the painting, but in my print the green on the hat goes perfectly with the shades of pink in the girls’ dresses. We don’t live in that house anymore, but the print is hanging above my couch right now, virtually the only pink in my entire house. I still despise bright/deep pinks [i.e. every single “girl” thing being sold nowadays], but I find this and pale/baby pink to be calming and soothing.
Ah, dusty rose . . . so romantic, wouldn’t you say? Surely not the mauve from the 80’s . . . right? Couldn’t be . . .
Let us not forget your other color predictions, the most memorable being the rebirth/invasion of chocolate brown (circa??) and your piece de resistance – THE {original} BLACK LEGGING TREND of 1988.
I have to say, dusty rose, is not one of my favorites however you pull off wearing the color in a stunning way my friend. Happy Birthday week!!!
In 1998 I decorated my living room, dining room and foyer in aqua right down to an aqua colored rug with a white border. I was soooooooo before my time! Not feeling the dusty rose, though, but who knows. Those coffee colored walls I have now may take on a “rosey” glow before you know it.
Okay for the record, I am not a fan of dusty rose, aka MAUVE, in regards to home decor. Couches, dried flowers and raffia bows. Hells no. But I am a fan and champion of all shades of pink when it comes to attire. Always have been, always will be. I did tell you pink looked good on your long ago did I not? I was psyched that Gap did a non traditional shade of it for my man’s sweatshirt so I had to pick it up. Only wish they and Gymboree would get with it though in the little boys department. Poor Syd will forever be in some sort of cream colored fisherman’s type of sweater for many years to come…finding pink for a little boy? Now that’s a hard mission.
Jules, as usual, I am 100% with you. I’m really into any colors lately that are dusty. grey, camel, pink, mint… you name it the dryer the better! I want to look at the color and be positively thirsty! I’ve never been particularly drawn to pastels, or pink for that matter, but this ‘dustiness’ thing is super pleasing to me.
