This might be one of my biggest projects yet, and I don’t even have to move from my chair. I spent two hours last night cleaning up my pinterest boards. I went from 156 to 104 boards. That’s a decrease of 33.33%. Not bad! I would love to get under 100 boards, but that’s impossible since I haven’t moved over my boards from the library account I started a couple of months ago.
Yes, I started the library account because my original account was too cluttered for me to find anything. Heaven forbid I just clean out the cluttered account! At least now I can say that I’ve taken steps to having a pinterest account that won’t give me a nervous breakdown.
Things I’m doing to clean up my Pinterest space:
- Deleting all boards with only 1 or 2 pins
- Deleting all boards that are no longer relevant, like boards on specific books I’ve read
- Deleting all recipe boards that include ingredients I no longer eat, like chicken
- Deleting inspiration boards for rooms/trips/designs that are no longer relevant (I no longer need a laundry room board, for example)
- Giving all boards heading and sub-heading
- Alphabetizing all boards
I’m still working on all bullet items, especially the last two. Alphabetizing boards takes forever! You have to move them around with your mouse because pinterest isn’t enough of a time-suck as it is, I guess. I want to see a button that says “ALPHABETIZE BOARDS” and then be done. I’ll pin that under “In My Dreams.”
Alana in Canada says
I hear you on the alphabetizing. Why that isn’t automatic, I’ll never know–I mean they provide that for you when you pin, so it isn’t like it is unknown to them that it is helpful! And it does take forever.
My main problem w/Pinterest consists with having very similar boards, like a “projects” board and a “how to” board. I am no longer sure what the distinction is and so stuff gets jumbled between the two.
You can give boards a sub-heading?
Jules says
UGH. I deleted a lot of similar boards. Similar to you, I had a “DIY” and then a “Crafts” board. Why? It makes no sense when under DIY I was pinning crafts. It’s not like I was using the title DIY properly!
I give boards subheading, but it’s not a pinterest thing. Basically, I did board titles like HOME: Bathroom; HOME: Family Room, etc. This way, when I alphabetize my boards, all the home boards will be together.

I love Pinterest, but I know what you mean about organization. I worked on it one day, organizing, I mean, but it seemed so overwhelming. I thought I needed more boards, not less, to actually put things where I can find them. I keep wanting to write it all down and organize on paper, but, duh, isn’t that defeating the point of an electronic “scrapbook”? I’d like to be able to move things from one board to another, without having to re-pin and go back to delete the item from the first board. Do you know if you can do that?
Ashlea says
If you move your mouse over the pin and click the pencil icon, or click on the pin and click edit, you can select a different board. Click save when you’re done.
Jules says
Yes, I was going to say that to Barbara. Thanks!!! :)
Jules says
Ashlea already answered your editing question, so I’ll chime in regarding organization. Yes! I need more boards, and I start to have so many that I start craving a way to organize it all. What’s the point? It’s like using my calendar on my phone and then backing it up on 12 different paper calendars–which I have done.

Weird, I did the same thing this weekend, and it took forever. I have actually been contemplating getting a second account to separate my food and decor pin streams. If you are using the pin button on your menu bar, do you need to log in and out each time you want to pin something to the library account, and then to your other account? How does the pinning thingy know which account to use? (I realize I am showing my age and luddite capabilities with this question.)
Jules says
Yes, you have to log in/out for each account, so you can’t just pin where you want. Logging in and out of accounts is why I want to try and merge the two accounts. The best work-around I have found is to have pinterest personal on my desktop and pinterest library on the laptop. It’s still not ideal.

The heading and subheading have been HUGE for me.
And I’m glad I’m not the only one who like USEFUL pinterest boards.
Jules says
I went through it and had to wonder why I had half the boards I created. I’m really hoping the heading/subheading is a game changer. Now when I want something home related, I just scroll down to my “Home” section.

Did you know that you can click and drag the Boards into new positions? I figured that out by accident, and now all my wedding boards are grouped together. I cannot wait to be married so I can unfollow all wedding boards and just move on with my life. The pressure is insane.
Jules says
I did! I spent a kabillion hours doing that. Ugh.
Congrats on the wedding!!! :)
