I don’t know what table I am saving to buy, but my Pinterest says it’s somewhat country with a 60% chance of Windsor chairs. Are they even comfortable?
I love the farmhouse tables. The Sumner table at Pottery Barn has that rustic farmhouse table look. I found mine on craigslist for about a third of the PB price.
I find Windsor chairs not all that comfortable after a while, but the tolix chairs in the first picture look pretty good with the farmhouse table. You can find a similar set of four of those on Overstock for under $200 if you look under Tabouret chairs. I’ve been thinking of ordering them for myself; my kids are destroying my current chairs.
I was actually coming to make the same comment as Lisa. I find the rails on the back of Windor chairs dig into my back, but I LOVE the tolix chairs with the farmhouse table. We don’t even have a dining room these days – it’s now the piano/computer/dogs’ room, but if/when we ever do again, that’s what I want. I bought the Tabouret stools in white from overstock for my craft table and really like them – the seats are much more comfortable than I thought they would be. Very happy with them so far.
I interviewed an woodwright once; while he focuses on rocking chairs, he also crafts Windsor chairs–and they were SO comfortable. Seriously, I couldn’t believe it. Therein, lies the key: the hand of the craftsman, can’t be beat . . .
I love rustic or farmhouse, but I’m wondering if it will go with my living room/open floor plan. Maybe I need to reign myself in and go more traditional dining room.
More traditional will mean a table top that is less forgiving/more formal, I think. Will you eat there daily or only special occasions? I think eclectic is more interesting. . . .go for the rustic look, with some restraint.
We eat there three meals a day. We don’t have an eat in kitchen! The dining room is it. So, yeah, I guess it does have to be something that can take a beating.
My Windsor chairs are VERY comfortable, but I have 3 boys 2,5,7 and had a hard time cleaning them with all the bars and curves so I got more modern chairs (the mix still looks nice with my rustic painted table) that are one solid curved piece of wood. Awesome for the kids and cleaning, but when i sit my back end in that Windsor chair after the practical chair, it’s SO nice.
Help, where is everyone getting these farmhouse tables? That is exactly what I am looking for. I don’t want leaves/the crack in the table. All ideas welcome. I have only seen what I want for about $2500-3200 for the table alone. That is way way over what I am willing to pay. There has to be a less $$$$ but nice way to get that look.
I don’t find Windsor chairs to be uncomfortable. And I wish I had known last year, before we moved out of the Inland Empire, that you might want a new table. I have one that I think would be just what you’re looking for and I’d love to get rid of it! Alas, now we’re too far away…
We have the Big Sur table from Crate and Barrel which is incredible. It is a solid hunk o table. We have an Outlet in Berkeley where I picked it up for $299. Deal of the century. It has some dings, but that just takes the pressure off when my toddler digs her fork into it.
World Market actually has a decent selection of dining room tables. Ours has held up to daily abuse (from a budding drummer no less). We choose a “rustic” finish so that he could add character to the top. Or at least that’s what we’re telling ourselves. We also choose a lower price tag so that the character wouldn’t make us feel like we’d invested too much in something that we’d feel bad replacing as our lives changed. That said, its a solid table, when we replace it it will be because of either my constantly changing aesthetic (btw, I think its totally normal to have had five dining room tables, sounds like fun :) or because we’ve outgrown it.
Lots of people have had success with Ana White’s farmhouse table plans. She has several to choose from and they are not hard to customize. The only difficulty, I think, might be finding the wood, especially the chunkier pieces for the legs. I agree with previous posters that a well-made windsor chair is SOOO comfortable. But I like the look of the Tolix style ones as well, so it could go either way.
You should check out this post – she has links to several industrial-type alternatives to the orginal Tolix. The overstock chairs got so-so reviews, so even though I’m very happy with the stools I’m not sure I’d order the chairs. http://theletteredcottage.net/industrial-chairs/

The rustic wood plank style table is what I have in my dining room and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
I didn’t do the Windsor style chair, but chose a slat back European farmhouse one instead. Similar to this one:

I want to live in the French (or Italian) countryside so for now, this will have to do.
Have a great day!!

I LOVE ladderback chairs! Where did you get your dining table? (Hi, Jill!)

Hi Jules!
I ordered it through North Carolina about 8 years ago. It’s the Attic Heirloom collection from Broyhill:

They show it with their Windsor chair funny enough, but I chose this one (without a cushion seat – mine are woven thatched):

I LOVE it. That’s the table I want. I’m driving to Cabazon to see if they have one at the outlet store.

I saw that the other day! I love that you can get them in different colors. Thanks for thinking of me. :)
