It’s true what they say; as you get older, you start to figure out what you like and what you don’t. Get a little older, and you even stop caring if other people like what you like. I’m not quite there yet, but I am starting to see patterns in the type of room I prefer. I am not educated enough in design and decor to give my style a label but, much like Justice Stewart, I know it when I see it.
Cute, young thing Bryn Alexandra took an outfit she liked from Jessica at What I Wore and used it as inspiration to design a make-believe room.

It’s definitely not one of the light and airy rooms you see everywhere these days, which I why I love it. Ever since I painted the kitchen, I’ve realized and come to welcome with open arms the fact that I love deep, dark colors. To me, they are warm and cozy and soothing. And, hello! I think I could make this work in my home. I already started adding the black (curtains, backsplash, door), my floors are gold/caramel, and the IKEA sectional I want is close enough (in color) to that white sofa that it might work. The pendant is similar to one The Mister and I have had bookmarked for months. The only thing is the fabric and lamp, which feature the color red. I would use green, instead, only because I don’t like red in my house.
Hmm. Now that I look at the images again and compare it with my kitchen, maybe I just like high contrast? Who knows. I like it, and that is all that matters. Has your taste in decor changed over the years, or have you finally figured out what you like or don’t like? I’ll tell you, my love of black and high contrast took me by surprise.

i can’t get enough orange. from bright orange to warm dark orange. it’s accented in the mostly brown living room and now on my porch. i like it because it can be earthy or mod. it just makes me happy. it surprises me though because i’ve always loved cool blue tones and charcoal grey. but i feel like if i followed my House Beautiful mag, there would be a zebra skin rug in every room, including the kitchen! :)

It’s amazing how much my style has changed over the last year, at least in terms of home decor. I started out with a super bright and colorful palette, and am not refining it to be more soothing with accents of color. I still prefer color on my walls to beiges and whites, but I find I am leaning towards softer colors rather than vibrant ones! I used to love green and orange, and now I am finding myself leaning towards yellows and teal-blues. I have also gone from an ‘Ikea style’ to more of a mid-century style. Mind you, Ikea is a lot cheaper than mid-century furniture, so I still maintain my Ikea style. I call it transitional. :)

As I get older, my style is definitely changing. Even last night, I got the poor woman’s botox! Bangs! According to my hairstylist! See, changing styles is good. Not quite sure I can pull off some of those bright colors in my home with the hubster, but maybe someday. :)

I have seen my style change…somewhat. I find that my style has always been a bit of a mix match of syles. I love a house that is warm, inviting and cozy but also functional. I know you said most designers hate Pottery Barn. I like looking through their mag and getting ideas just as much as I do on design blogs One thing that will never change is my love for color! I love color on the walls. I have a wheat yellow living room, a chocolate dinning room, a barn read bathroom and I have a teal/blue bedroom. And thanks to your wonderful kitchen remodel I am considering a bold warm brown/grey for the kitchen!

Oh I love when people do the wardrobe to room, this one was awesome. I like cozy too! I think the white sofa will keep it from being to cold and I agree high contrast is very pleasing! Can’t wait to see the pics!!!

I’ve wondered how much of my style is truly my own preferences or influenced by magazines, etc. My favourite is what I think of as a Martha Stewart palette: cool shades of blue, grey, green, white … I’ve read before that people often decorate in colours that look good on them, and this is true in my case! I appreciate warm colours in other people’s homes but never gravitate to them for my own. Ditto for very bright colours.
I think what it boils down to is that ideally your home gives you the feeling you want it to. Some people love to be energized or inspired by their home. I want my home to be instill calm, and those cool, soft colours say ‘calm’ to me.
