“Picking friends is a tough job, Nico. Probably the toughest job in school! There are a lot of things you need to think about. I mean, that’s great that Sammy makes cool explosion sounds with his lips, but just because someone is cool on the outside, doesn’t mean they are cool on the inside. You have to make sure they are cool on the inside, too. If someone is cool on the outside but mean on the inside, they really aren’t cool. They’re just…mean. And that’s why Sammy made you cry at recess.”

Oh, oh. I wish he could have those same conversations with the little brother in our family. Seems Nico and my little one have the same issues.
Yeah, Nico hangs out with kids that aren’t always the best behaved, and I hear from other parents that these kids are trouble makers. Sigh.

I agree with him regarding the sharks in the swimming pool. I saw Jaws when I was eight and it scarred me 4/life.

I need Mikey to come explain this mean on the inside phenomenon to my oldest, she just can’t quite wrap her head around it still. He (and I’m guessing this foundation comes from you) has a great grasp on how to read people.
I was stunned. I was trying to tell Nico why it’s important to choose your friends, and Mikey–being Mikey–jumped in and took over the conversation. Since a little brother is more likely to listen to his older brother than he is his mother, I let him at it. I was so proud of him!

I think your kids sound awesome. I would definitely encourage my kids to be friends with them if we lived anywhere near you….ha ha, I am sure they are cool on the inside too!
