The Additions

We all underestimated Nicholas, including the volunteer working the festival booth. It’s just that he’s so cute, with his wide, almond eyes and almost indecipherable lisp. Notwithstanding the cute factor, there was also the obvious: it isn’t easy for a three year old to toss a ping-pong ball into a miniature fish bowl from a distance of five feet. That’s why when Nicholas took his turn after a very frustrated and empty handed Mikey, we all chuckled. The volunteer put his hands on his knees, smiled at Nicholas and said, “Here you go, buddy. Just give it your best shot.”

It is my pleasure to introduce to you, from left to right, Georgie Boy, G.I. Joe, and Isaac.

Thank goodness this month was our no-spending month, barring emergencies and essentials. I have spent an inordinate amount of personal time and money keeping these three rascals alive. I love them.

the same thing happened to me with a goldfish! I won it by catching it with a paper net (!) and after I went home and read what to do to take care of a goldfish, I spent about $70 on supplies for him…
but he lived for a long time :)

Okay, apparently I have morning induced dislexia … because I thought you had a goldfish named Boy George. :) But I digress … welcome to the newest members of the family!

Go Nicholas. My kids wouldn’t have been allowed to play a game where you win fish, I cannot stand fish. Well, I like fish, but I dislike caring for them. My mom bought Zoe five goldfish four years ago and I keep waiting for them to die off, but I’ve had no such luck. The kids are going to go off to college and I will still be cleaning the fish tank.

Tell me about it. Turns out goldfish are the pigpens on the water world. We did not think the boys would win, especially not Nicholas aka Fernando Valenzuela. I’m kind of glad he won at least three because I felt bad for all the fish left behind. I feel bad for fish as pets in general after I saw Finding Nemo. I keep thinking that we stole someone’s baby! (Even though these goldfish are “feeders” produced on a farm to feed carnivorous fish. I guess I can feel good about sparing them the experience of being eaten alive. Yikes.)

Congrats on your new additions! I’m pretty sure that my high maintenance dog is less maintenance than three gold fish. After my college experience with two gold fish I will never ever again have fish. Dang fish!

Lol, ‘Isaac’ that’s a really interesting name for a fish.

Hi! I’m Jules.

I used to be an attorney, but it made me grumpy. Now I write about life, sweet and savory, as a wife and mother to two small boys. My knowledge of dinosaurs knows no bounds.

You can read more, including the meaning behind the name Pancakes and French Fries here. And, yes, I really am phenomenally indecisive.
