What We Did Today

Mikey didn’t have school today, so I was determined to make it fun for him. Unfortunately, all the museums were closed. We improvised. We baked the Versunkener Apfelkuchen (German Apple Cake) from The Joy of Vegan Baking.

{The way Nico closed his eyes as he took a drag of warm cake aroma cracked me up!}

The we went to the library. It’s one of their favorite places to go.

Main Library

And when that library didn’t have the books we wanted, we went to another one.

Library #2

First we ate lunch in the parking lot. I harassed them from the front seat. No, I’m not wearing makeup. Thanks for noticing.

I See You

Then we went inside. They played while I looked at old movies and picked up some books I had on hold.

Then we came home, read books, napped (Nico) and started on dinner. Wait until I tell you about dinner.  I’ll do it tomorrow when the chef is in school.

    awww…cuteness.

I would like to adopt your kids. Except I could never raise them as well. Plus, you seem to enjoy it.

Looks like a perfect day! That pic of Nico – enraptured by the sweet aroma of the cake as Mikey gazes upon it lovingly – was too, too much. I’m glad to see you are raising boys who appreciate the finer things …

And how cool is this editing business? I actually got to write “you are raising … ” rather than the initial “you a raising … ” Good times …

Ah It seemed like a nice day, perfect:) That snap of Nico is hilarious, it looks like he has your sense of humor, he always does funny things. That cake looked eye closing whiffing good! And gosh that boy of yours Mikey is too handsome, I swear I can’t believe that the Gap hasn’t seen your blog and snatched him up! AND I didn’t notice you weren’t wearing makeup but how AWESOME your brows are, just perfect!

Okay, waaaaaaaay more sophisticated than our day home from school. Hmmm, is it the law degree that makes for a better leader? Here I was thinking I was some sort of hero for baking cupcakes.

    What a great day!!!

Hey. I thought I already commented on this post, but I’m probably just dreaming. I’ve been wondering, are you strictly vegan? Or are you like me and cook in a variety of ways – sometimes eating vegan meals, vegetarian meals, and meals with meat/eggs, et cetera. I am curious. I have been reading your blog for a while, but perhaps I have missed this fact.

  15. Jules says:

Susan–I do whatever works. I try to cook organic and local, which costs a fortune. Consequently, I cook a lot of vegan/vegetarian meals. I’ve also read all the literature citing the importance of eating more plant based foods, so I do that, too.

Mikey was allergic to eggs for a very long time, so vegan baking is something that comes naturally for me now. :)

Hi! I’m Jules.

I used to be an attorney, but it made me grumpy. Now I write about life, sweet and savory, as a wife and mother to two small boys. My knowledge of dinosaurs knows no bounds.

You can read more, including the meaning behind the name Pancakes and French Fries here. And, yes, I really am phenomenally indecisive.
