I’ve decided that a daily yoga practice will work best for me right now and, if the studies are to be believed, for the rest of my life. I went ahead and bought the Yoga Studio app because it was the one most recommended and had great reviews. I’ll test it out for the next 30 days and report back with my thoughts every week or so. In fact, I might go back to my Monday update posts. That weekly thought journaling, for lack of a better description, was another key to keeping me on track.
I thought this infographic and companion article from the Huffington Post on how yoga changes your body was interesting.

This sounds like a fantastic app. I did Bikram Yoga for a while and I loved it but I am looking more into workouts I can do at home rather than studios, so this might be a great alternative!
I am a new reader by the way and I laughed out loud reading your About page – you know especially the part about skipping lunch out of indecisiveness – welcome to the club :)

Yay I can’t wait to read your updates! That’s also kicking my a** to get back into a daily practice.

I just came back to yoga after a few years away and it feels amazing. I’ve been going to classes at the gym. I would love to start practising more regularly at home but so far don’t have the motivation to do it on my own beyond a few sun salutations. Looking forward to hearing how you do with the app.

Hey Jules – is this your first time trying yoga? I’ve never tried it before and I was wondering if the app has enough guidance for a newbie?

Great decision! I started taking classes offered during my lunch hour at work Mondays and Wednesdays. It’s been 6 months and I’m loving it! I bet you will too!

I absolutely love yoga. I started doing it when I was pregnant with Violet and have found myself going in spurts. I do best in a class with a challenging instructor but when I can’t make time for class, I have a hard time keeping up with a home practice. Can’t wait to hear what you think about your app.

I love yoga, but I have a really hard time practicing on my own (and I’m a certified instructor!). My gym has a limited class schedule for the summer, so lately I’ve been going to free classes at Lululemon. If you have a store in your area you should check them out. Each month they feature a different local studio (who then usually offer a free class at their location for first timers). If there’s no Lulu in your area you could see if another clothing store offers something similar, I’ve heard Lorna Jane does this too.

Yay! I’m going to do this too! Consistent yoga practice is amazing, and just this morning I was thinking about how stiff I felt. Be sure to check out local yoga studios – lots of them offer free introductory or first timer classes, it’s really nice to get in a new environment and explore different styles.

I need to do something like this, too. I’ve fallen off our morning walks (variety of reasons, some more valid than others) and need to get moving regularly again. Love reading the ideas in the comments!

Hey Jules, I also want to add that in addition to the app, as you get more into it (and perhaps once the school year starts again) you could also try a studio class (many of them offer discounted intro rates, e.g. 2 weeks for $20). I have found over the years, over various styles, that a good instructor who notices your pose can really help you figure out the poses (proper expression, full expression, etc) and also encourage you to push yourself a little more than you might at home. Of course, not all instructors are great, but I’m sure you’ll figure out which ones to listen to and which ones to ignore.

Oh good for you! Maybe this will motivate me to try this. My older daughter started going to yoga classes – even though she doesn’t “believe” in it. And still doesn’t – but absolutely feels better and continues to go. A few weeks ago she was at a particular kind of class – don’t remember what she said it was. They were holding a position that opens up the hips or something – supposedly the place women hold their emotions. Again – she doesn’t “believe.” Except that in this position, she suddenly started to cry. Not sobbing out loud, but tears coursing down her cheeks. So maybe now she believes just a little.
