On friendship
“Picking friends is a tough job, Nico. Probably the toughest job in school! There are a lot of things you need to think about. I mean, that’s great that Sammy makes cool explosion sounds with his lips, but just because someone is cool on the outside, doesn’t mean they are cool on the inside. You have to make sure they are cool on the inside, too. If someone is cool on the outside but mean on the inside, they really aren’t cool. They’re just…mean. And that’s why Sammy made you cry at recess.”

On reputation
“Sammy gets Red Cards all the time?! Nico! You can’t be hanging out all the time with a boy that gets Red Cards. People are going to think you’re the kind of boy that gets Red Cards. These are the things you have to think about in school, Nico. You can still be nice to him, but I think you should hang out with Markie. You’ve known him since before school started. You know his history.”
::::::
On phobias
“Mom, I need you to explain to me again why there won’t be any sharks in the pool at swim practice.”
::::::
On enterprise
“Mom, this picture is perfect for my business cards for my comic business.”
::::::
On ingenuity
“I am going to make something that will change the world.”
I have no doubt that boy is going to ‘make something that will change the world.’ I’m kinda excited to see what it might be . . .
Your Mikey is wise beyond his age and Nico is quite lucky to have him for a brother!
Oh, oh. I wish he could have those same conversations with the little brother in our family. Seems Nico and my little one have the same issues.
Yeah, Nico hangs out with kids that aren’t always the best behaved, and I hear from other parents that these kids are trouble makers. Sigh.
I have to echo all of the comments above–He is so funny and yet wise beyond his age!
Well cross out Sammy and circle Markie! =D
lol @ sharks. bright, funny kid!
He is sooooo scared of sharks! It’s bordering a phobia now. I hope he grows out of it!
Boy is *rocking* that chapeau.
I have often thought life would be vastly improved if we could issue yellow and red cards like they do in soccer.
You have no idea how long he has been asking me for a hat like that. At least a year!
omg, so precious! and so wise.
Serious wisdom
I agree with him regarding the sharks in the swimming pool. I saw Jaws when I was eight and it scarred me 4/life.
For Mikey it was Youtube videos.
Oh my goodness…these keep getting better and better. I love that Mikey is taking his big brother role so seriously.
Again I say it.
Arranged marriage.
I need Mikey to come explain this mean on the inside phenomenon to my oldest, she just can’t quite wrap her head around it still. He (and I’m guessing this foundation comes from you) has a great grasp on how to read people.
I was stunned. I was trying to tell Nico why it’s important to choose your friends, and Mikey–being Mikey–jumped in and took over the conversation. Since a little brother is more likely to listen to his older brother than he is his mother, I let him at it. I was so proud of him!
Awww! Your young man’s soul is so beautiful! I love these, every time you post them.
He is gorgeous (inside too!) what a model for your younger boy. You must be so proud!
What a great big brother he is! I hope Nicholas appreciates the good advice, although we know people don’t always. :)
So far he hasn’t, unfortunately.
Words to live by! ..I love when you publish things your kids say. Adorable!
Thanks, everyone, for the nice comments. I love that boy so much.
Love it! That friendship advice is priceless kiddo! :)
Great advice from a great kid :)
(Yeah, I agree with little brother being more likely to listen to older sibling, being the older sister myself :))
Oh, what a wise older brother to have!
Nico is one lucky little boy to have a big brother like Mikey. What a great big brother he is.
“You know his history”. . ohmygosh, best line ever. Your son is so wise and funny. With the fedora and the words of wisdom, I kept thinking “Godfather”.
Oh, the phobias one made me laugh so hard, that is too much. I love these to pieces!
love the question about sharks in the pool! I am fairly certain that I asked that exact same question pretty much every summer growing up! I really wish that my daughter had an older brother with this kind of advice. Wait, I wish I had an older brother with this kind of advice!!!! <3
I think your kids sound awesome. I would definitely encourage my kids to be friends with them if we lived anywhere near you….ha ha, I am sure they are cool on the inside too!
