On school
“I had the best day today, mom. You know why? Because Robby got his first ever 100% on his practice spelling test. I was so proud of him.“
::::::
On popularity
“I have no idea why all the fifth grade girls like me, mom. Probably because I’m hot?”
::::::
On nature
“The house fly can live anywhere from 15-30 years.” [It’s actually 15-30 days, thank goodness. –Jules.]
::::::
On style
“Mom, if I wear my necklace with a tank top I look like a tough guy, right? Sweet! That’s what I thought.”
::::::
On balance
“I can’t stop reading! I know you understand, mom.”
::::::
On cooking
“For flavor, mom, I’ll give you a 10. Presentation is a 5. These turkey pieces, well, they’re all over the place.”
::::::
On parenting
“This week, mom, I’m going to have to give you a 5. You tried, but there was definitely room for improvement.”
Mikey is one great and fantastic kid. How could I have missed volume 1?
That, my friend, is awesome. And look how grown up he’s looking!
Ho.Ly.Smokes. That is hilarious. Love him!
Love it! I wonder if, when I have kids, I will be ever so slightly tempted to compare their musings to Mikey’s. I hope not, because it’s just not fair to expect them to be this completely and totally charming.
I wonder the same thing about Nicholas. I hope I don’t! Mikey really has a way with words, and has since he was very young. Nico is more of a bruiser.
Hilarious!
oh my word. first of all, he is adorable. no wonder the little girls love him! :) and he really does just have the best way with words. he sounds like he has the innocence of a child, but the perception of a grow-up, lol. really loved reading these; props to you for writing them all down!
I keep a post-it stuck to my monitor. When he says something cute or funny, I write it down. There is no way I would remember what he says otherwise, and I want to be sure I get the wording right.
This is my favorite column, I love Mikey and his Mommy.
These are the best. Mikey’s so awesome.
HA! His cooking comments made me literally LOL. Sounds a lot like my little guy…last night, my pasta was “a little dry, so I need more milk to re-hydrate.”
Mikey LOVES cooking and has since he was really little–like 2 or 3. In fact, way back in the archives there is a post where I talk about his love of Ina Garten, who he still calls Maazy. In preschool he always played in the kitchen at school. Now he loves, loves, loves Top Chef, Chopped, and all the food challenges on Food Network. That’s where all the presentation and grading comments come in. He’s copying what he hears on TV. :)
Oh, and that parenting comment was because my husband was in New Jersey for a week this month, and I was a terrible mom. Yelling all the time, overwhelmed, unorganized, etc. Mikey was late to school twice! I apologized at the end of the week to them and said I knew I didn’t do a very good job. He was trying to console me with that parenting comment while at the same time agreeing I completely sucked. :)
i love my nephew!!! :-)
And he loves you back! :)
I love this! What a great kid he must be! I’m really enjoying the sweet innocence of my six-month-old, but at the same time, I look forward to her growing up a bit, just because of gems like these.
I used to get really sad with each birthday, and I still do to a certain degree. But, since he has started reading…it’s been AWESOME.
if he is this smart at this age, bet you can’t wait for the teenage years!!!
Thanks once again for sharing the hilarity that is your son. I always get such a kick out of the stuff he says. :)
Site looks good to me. And Mikey is pure awesome. I can see Syd saying stuff like this too as he gets older. Some kids just have a way about them, like they’re smart and funny and charming without even trying. Of course all kids are awesome, but some kids just have it :) I can tell that’s probably how he is, and how Syd is too :)
I give Mikey a 10 for originality and preciousness!
Keep this segment coming. I am rolling here.
Lucky mom!
what a wit! love it. it’s so great that you are keeping track of these. my favorites are when my kids would get the names of things wrong–substituting words that sounded similar. example: statue of jeopardy and pirates of the can-of-beans. unfortunately (or fortunately?) they get most words now.
Started reading because I enjoyed your words but Mikey is Wow.
Have to comment. On school, I was, “Awwwww,” and on cooking, style, and parenting, I was, “Oh wow.” Too, too, too funny. Gotta write stuff Sophia says down! It’s usually in the car or walking or someplace that is impossible. Sigh.
Are you holding back more of these? Don’t stop! It’s so funny and sweet. I hope he doesn’t grow out of it- it might just keep getting better.
I really love your blog. I have three daughters. I love reading about your mom to boys perspective.
That was awesome! Thanks for sharing, that made my day!
Oh man, I just love that kid! Mikey is hilarious Jules! And “so hot.” hahahah
