I smiled at the return of the peacock chair last summer. I think they’re fun, bohemian, and the kind of chair you look good in reading Spanish literature on a hot summer night. They remind me of the 70s, a decade I–and everyone else–is looking back on through rose colored lenses.
That said, no discount or thrift store find on earth could get me to buy one. This summer it’s the 70s, next summer the 80s. Sometimes you have to know when to pass on a trend, and I think peacock chairs are trends. Big, space eating trends.
But even I and my steely resolve can’t resist a chair left free for the taking on the curb just one block over from my home. Isn’t that a bit like having one drop in your lap? Free is a price I feel comfortable spending on trends.
I’m going to put it on our covered porch in the back, clean it up, and surround it with plants, pillows, and comfy seating made for lounging in good weather. They give off a vibe, these peacock chairs.

Ooh, I lurve finding things on the curb. When we lived in DC, at the end of the college year, the ambassadors’ kids would haul huge amounts of furnishings to the dumpster area in our complex. We made out like kings. Kings, I tell you!

Holy cow, I can only imagine what they left behind!

Those chairs always screamed “California” to me : )

You know, I would totally consider a peacock chair if I looked (and felt) as laid back and cool as either one of those two women … alas, every time I’ve sat in one, I feel more akin to Edith Ann …

I have to admit, mine is for a…slimmer gal. I’ll probably just look at it and smile. And then have my niece sit in it.

I’ll have you know, I dreamed about this chair last night. It was my office chair. I’m sitting in it, typing away, thinking “Jules knows a thing or two, this chair is fabulous!” :)

I have a peacock chair in my basement that my husband brought to the marriage. Imagine that–possibly the last thing he brought from bachelorhood that actually remains. In 20 years, I have not been able to bring myself to get rid of it, though it is a space grabber. I envision a life where I will make the chair part of an interesting scenario/vignette that is far cooler than my current everyday life. Maybe it will get the boot when my 8th grader decides to make the basement her lair for entertaining. . . .and maybe not. . . . enjoy your new find–you probably have the perfect spot for it!

My grandparents brought back one of these with them from when they lived in Hawaii. And I always sat there when I’d visit. My friends and I called it the Princess chair… and I sat in it every chance I got :)

Amazing. I bought one of those for $2 at a Goodwill when I entered college–fancied myself as some kind of bohemian, I guess. Strange, as a real bohemian would have bought one of those wide, fabric, papillons. But one wasn’t for sale at Goodwill for $2. I carted that thing around forever. It never made for good sitting, but it was cool.
