While you were all busy leaving me fabulous tips on flying with children (which my real life friends are finding helpful, too) I went shopping in my parent’s cupboards. This is what I found.
- Canon A1, circa 1978-80
- Polaroid SX70, circa 1978
- Canon Speedlite
- Macro lens
- Zoom lens
I know that polaroids are passe for some people. Lucky for me, I’m not some people. I’m really excited to show Mikey how this magic box works. The film is expensive (more than the camera is worth) so he will first learn that it’s a restrained, disciplined sort of magic.
As if I wasn’t already counting down the days to summer vacation.

Wow those are some really great cupboards! My first memory of photography is taking a picture with my grandmother’s Polaroid when I was about 3- it was totally magic to me, and it became my career!

OMG, I didn’t even know you could still BUY Polaroid film. I’ve got two camera’s in the closet.
I tried to take a picture with my old 35 mm camera to use up the film in it and my granddaughter (age seven) asked me if she could “see the camera” and flipped it to the back to try to see the “instant” picture as if All camera’s are digital.
We’ve crossed over officially to the Way Back When type people.

Yay! My boyfriend just bought 3 polaroids off ebay….hahah of course three was a mistake, he just wanted one.
Thinking he would get caught up in a bidding war over what we both considered an extremely valuable commodity, I advised him to bid on multiple cameras. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised to get a text message 10 hours later that he’d won all three! (Luckily they managed to be fairly – and surprisingly – cheap).
Regardless, apparently Polaroids are back in (or will be soon), which I’m hoping will bring the price of film down.
But you’re right, pricier film means wiser shot choices, similar to shooting on 35 mm vs. HD cam. Hopefully the polaroids will encourage more artistic shots for both yours and mine.
And, in other news, I’m keeping all my cameras (broken or not) since they’re so meaningful to me, and I anticipate someday, in the future, they’ll be super rad to have around.

I was reading somewhere that polaroid might start producing film again sometime this summer or next year.

Yay! That’s exciting! My sister recently gave me a vintage Polaroid SX-70 camera, and I was SO giddy! I too got Impossible Project film, and it’s worked well! I agree with you, the land of Polaroid teaches you patience and self control.
I love the lessons I learn through film photography – it keeps you on your toes – you have to plan well but you still don’t know exactly what you’ll get.

GASP! Ohmy. And how could you not love a polaroid? Yeah, I can’t imagine either.
Needless to say, good times will be had by all…

Awesome! I found an old Konica with a zoom lens at a church ‘lopis’ for 20 bucks. I am going to sign up for a class to learn how to really use it. I love film.
