I have a zoom lens, but I didn’t use it. To be honest, as pretty as they are, birds up close kind of scare the crap out me with their beady eyes and creepy, taloned feet.
I’ve never seen one either and I agree – birds are kinda creepy up close. But that nest is really cool! It looks like it’s just floating on that plant.
Way cool Jules! I guess I never even thought about a hummingbird’s home!? How did you find that? And LOL about the birds creeping you out. I kind of agree….
I’ve done some reading, and hummingbird nests are usually made from leaf fibers, moss, lichen, branches, twigs, and other soft bits and bobs. It’s all glued together with spider webs. (!!) Those little squares of white–they look like very thin paper or maybe parts of a plastic shopping bag? I didn’t want to get too close and tick off the mama hummingbird, who was about 20 feet away flying in circles.
The nest is in a potted plant on my neighbor’s front porch. She called us over when we were in the front yard playing with the boys.
I used to be very afraid of birds. Especially when one accidently fell down the fireplace chimney and flew around the house crashing into things READY to PECK my eyes out like Suzanne Pleshette (RIP) in The Birds.
I made myself house sit someone with large parrots that I had to feed and water. I eventually got over the fear and quit ducking when a bird’s shadow cast over me in the yard.
The nest is so cool!
Size comparrison needed please, for scale.
Amazing photos. One of my best friends has a bird phobia. We used to live together on 9th and C in the east village and there was a bird that lived at the corner who would seriously dive bomb just to scare her!!
precious! I love how it is just perched there, and I bet it is so tiny! but I agree, birds are a little scary, especially when young and featherless. we had a nest in our petunia basket last summer (two, actually) and as much fun as it was to watch, it was just as scary when I had to get close to water the flowers.
My yard is a certified wildlife sanctuary so, obviously, I love the birds that enliven my life but………………….your comment about them scaring the crap out of you made me roll on the floor laugh, ME TOO!
I’ve never seen a hummingbird nest… what the heck is it made out of? Its just balancing on that branch or what???
