I didn’t go to the meeting. But wait! I have a good reason. I remembered the Mister’s work has a program where they will pay for 50% of the cost of a 13 week Weight Watchers subscription for all employees and their dependents. Considering the fact this may be my last week to have such an offer presented to me, I called up HR and signed up. Now I just have to sit here and wait for my 13 week pass/booklet, which I am told should take no longer than 7 business days. All told, my registration and 13 weeks cost us $59. Not bad!
I spent the morning on Amazon imagining what I could buy with my saved $60. I found countless cookbooks that I am positive I must have (because the 50 in my kitchen will never do,) and it was during all this that I found Finally Thin! by Kim Benson. She might be old news to many of you, but for those, like me, who had never heard of her, she lost 212 pounds on Weight Watchers. Actually, she lost 212 pounds, dropped fourteen dress sizes, four ring sizes, one and a half shoe sizes, and knocked 200 points of cholesterol. And, this wasn’t her first attempt at Weight Watchers. It goes without saying that I am on my way to buy her book to see what I can learn from someone so successful.
I have to admit, as inspired as I am by someone like Kim, I am slightly terrified. I want to lose 50-75 pounds. She lost 3 times that. If I don’t lose 50, after she lost 212, what kind of loser would that make me?
Kelly says
Not, not, not a loser. You know that though. One day at a time, one step at a time, one minute (or second) at a time. Life is a journey. You can do this.
cara says
I totally agree with Kelly Jules. You are not a loser. You are more than the sum total of your weight. (I’m also trying to convince myself of this fact). One moment at a time. If you can resist a craving for a few minutes (I can’t remember the number) you are home free. Distract yourself. And you’ve got to move it move it! :) I got that from my kids’ McDonald’s toy from Madagascar. Get you some tapes/dvds that you can do at home…and don’t discount Pilates-it is not for weight loss so much as feeling stronger and better and LEANer. I’m here for ya girl! You can do it!
Jules says
Well, if I don’t lose 50 pounds then I am definitely NOT a loser. ;)
I just bought the book, which I will crack into after the boys nap. (Mikey is sick so I’m hoping he’ll nap today.)
There is a whole added layer of stress not that I know everyone is watching me do it. It’s good though. It should keep me honest.

Don’t hold her results up to you. Different people. You know.
More importantly, I’m in if I can drop a shoes size!
Does she tell you how I can trim down from an 11…?
Jules says
Becky, don’t worry about your feet. No one is looking–they’re all staring at your perfect Nair legs. :)
Brooke says
Good for you Jules, I so need to lose more weight too.

You’ll have to let us all in on the secrets from the book! I have no doubt you can do this and now that we all know about it we can cheer you on and drag you from temptation!

answer: no such loser. even if you gained a hundred pounds tomorrow you would still have two freakishly adorable children, the mister (who, p.s. is like, totally smokin’), and the ability to do things like sweeten foods with…agave? if you were able to turn a guy you met at TGIF (am i remembering this story correctly?) into your husband, then you can totally lose 50 lbs. and yes, that last sentence was written in proper science fair hypothesis format so i’m going to need to see the weight loss progress is pie chart form. God speed!

Hah! Thanks, Hannah. The Mister is smokin’, isn’t he? I keep begging him to let me post a picture of him. I snuck in the Hollywood one.

My husband and I each lost 60 pounds in 6 months on WW, and we’ve kept it off for over two years now. You can do it! :)
(By the way, that chili recipe I posted is very WW-friendly. Only 2 points for an 8 oz serving, or 4 points for 12 oz!)

Wow! Thanks, Anna! I knew you lost 60 pounds and read your new philosophy about food (portions, controlling the ingredients by cooking most of your meals, etc.) but you have no idea how happy I am to know Weight Watchers helped you reach your health goals. :)
p.s. Only 2 points for 8oz?! Fabulous!

We didn’t go to the meetings (we did it all online), and I have to admit I do not buy into the whole WW “lifestyle” (the chemical-laden food products, the various gadgets, etc.), but it’s an excellent way to keep track of how much you’re eating of the right (and wrong) foods. It completely changed how I approach food, and the way I think about what’s going into my body. By the time I was down to 17 points daily (!), I was going to make everything that went in my mouth as wonderful as it could possibly be!!

Anna, I’m the same way about chemicals and whole foods. Some of the people who read my blog like to tease me about my natural sweeteners and hippie dippie food choices. It’s all in good fun, and of course I love it. :)
Tink says
You must, must do WW, if you seriously need to lose. I tried the meeting route, and lost some ell bees, but time was a big issue for me to always get there. I have since signed up online, seeing as I am ALWAYS online, it made sense for me. It is easy to track points, it basically does it for you. I think that you will be surprised at how many point some “healthy” foods contain. It helps you make the healthier choice. I even have my other half constantly asking me, How many point is ….? and without even trying, he has lost eight pounds! I say go for it!
Jen says
Holy crap I love a Before and After story. So inspiring. I’ve lost 11 pounds on WW so far (and gained back 2). I’m really really trying to have it be a “for good” thing. That being said, I’m on my way to pick up a cheeseburger for dinner.
But THAT’S OKAY. I just have to make my mind know that, just because I’ve had a cheeseburger, I don’t throw in the towel and eat everything else in the house.
