Unstyled Life

Uncategorized

18 Mar

I had Morgan over to the house a while back.  She’s helping me with the living room, and despite my proclivity for hermit behavior and perfectionism, she finagled her way into my house, took a look around and said, “It’s not that you don’t have style. You just don’t have balls.”

She’s right. I have always worried about what people think, especially when it comes to decorating, though in the last year I have been better about giving a flying rip. I put up the vintage bullhorns even though I knew my brother in-law would find them utterly confusing. (He did.) My kitchen is almost black, and I have an ever growing collection of rocks and plants, even though I am not a high school science teacher. My books are still stacked on the green secretary for all the world to see, and I only blushed  a little when one family friend asked if I didn’t have a, um, bookshelf. A bookshelf for the books.

Well, if she thought the artfully stacked books were bad, the wig is going to fly off her head when she sees the blue vintage chesterfield from Craigslist. I think I found my balls.

    I want one! A ball.

My husband and I discussed for way too long last night how to “fix” the living room. I need one of those balls.

I love that couch!! and I agree with Morgan:: It’s your house, decorate it the way YOU want to!! PS Bookshelf?!? Aren’t stacks of books more creative than book shelves? ;)
    Have a wonderful weekend!!

I had been looking forever, too. A couple of years, at least. Morgan had almost given up the hunt, because the ones that do come up are insanely expensive around here. This one, though, belonged to a man’s grandmother. When he brought it home, his wife gave it the veto. She didn’t know what is was and said she had never seen a couch like that. It was our lucky day, because if she had looked up chesterfields on Craiglist for our area, she sure as heck would not have sold a 7’8″ sofa for chesterfield to me for $175.

Can you believe that? $175. I NEVER score deals like that. I call it the Morgan factor. She’s worth every penny, folks!

I have to ask because as long as I live in my current (s-m-a-l-l) house, I will never have a Chesterfield, are they as comfortable as they look? All I think about when I see one is that I want to curl up under a throw and read a book or watch a movie. Ha! It’s probably best I can’t have one because I think it would seriously hinder my productivity. I would imagine it’s very practical having kids, too.

P.S. Your unstyled life picture of the books on the green secretary is one of my favorite pictures. It’s in my “inspiration” folder because it makes me think of a very comfortable, laid back environment that still knows how to have fun. I want my house to be like that!

Thanks, I love that picture, too! I was surprised when she (and someone else, actually!) kindly questioned my sanity over the books.

As for the chesterfield, SO comfortable. It’s exactly as you described. Perfect for sleeping or reading.

Every time I see a picture of your house or read about it, I want to come and move in with you. This is not helping!

That’s YOUR couch? I straight thought you took that photo from a Design Sponge post! haha, kidding, I know you really don’t use any photos but your own, but you know what i mean ;) BEAUTIFUL! I almost stalked Morgan when I was in Hemet last weekend. She actually invited me ovah, but I chickened out because I was afraid I wouldn’t be cool enough, and now I know that I definitely wouldn’t be cool enough because I lack balls too ;)

That’s Morgan for you. Inviting people over, going over to a stranger’s house. She’s fearless. Jokes aside, she’s awesome and a crazy hard worker. (But, yeah, she’s too cool for me, too.)

This is the secret. If your house is completely vanilla for ever and ever and then you try one thing that expresses yourself, people will comment and question and try to push you back in line. Vintage bullhorns? Artistic book stacks? What? But once you get some momentum going, the house won’t be vanilla, it will be you. Soon those things won’t stand out, they will be part of the texture of your style. Then people stop pushing- or else they look like plebes.
    Have fun!

It’s AWESOME! I love it immensely! And I can’t believe you got it so cheap.

I guess my style has always been so manic and “out-there,” people don’t even look twice. When I painted our living room white my mom almost had a heart attack.

Yeah you got the couch! Lots of times people come over to my house and say “Wow, that’s so you!” which I know is generally as translated as “I would NEVER put that in my house, but it looks pretty cool here.” I think it’s not super-important what your taste is, only that it’s yours and that you move on it, so good job rockstar!
